BSoD fixed!!!

July 31, 2006

Reinstalled OS & other programs over the weekend and had a major BSoD problem yesterday. Whenever windows media player tries to play any form of media, BSoD comes out, and it’s related to my audio driver. (For those who REALLY dont know, BSoD means Blue Screen of Death. If you have never seen what one looks like, good for you, and pray that it continues that way.) The strangest thing was that VLC player could play media WITHOUT BSoD, and opening of windows media player WITHOUT attempting to play any form of media will not cause my com to go blue…

I spent most of the evening/night trying to troubleshoot. I tried to search the net for some clues, but those either aren’t similar to what i’m facing, or the advice they gave i’ve already tried. I even updated all the drivers - graphic, mobo (motherboard for those of you who dont know), audio (yes i did this first), but still the wonderful windows media player still initiated a BSoD uponing opening media files. I got frustrated and gave up. I even asked ZY to come over 2day during his night’s out to see what’s so wrong (he commented that this problem is SPECTACULAR.) Went to sleep feeling uneasy that my com still had this major problem. I say it’s a major problem because I watch ALOT of media (no porn). Anime, combo videos, occasional dramas & movies, and of course music. Yea, no doubt i can get VLC player to do the job, but windows media player is used in some websites that stream videos (not those youtube kind duh.).

And so, I slept a not-so-wonderful night away. The next morning i woke up, still thinking of a logical/possible solution to this BSoD. Initially i was still in half-asleep mode, so nothing could get into my head. During breakfast, something just struck me. For what reason i do not know, i thought that reinstalling my codec pack might solve the problem. So after eating, that was exactly what i did. Then, the only thing left to do was to test whether a BSoD will still happen. And so, i opened windows media player, then tried to open a media file. At that time i thought - “if this still causes a BSoD, i’ll just have to get ZY to come over to take a look” and started praying really really hard. Much to my delight, the video played smoothly for 15s continuously without any problems. (well, i dont have all the time in the morning. i need to get to camp.). Then i tried another file for about another 20s. Still no problems! No BSoD!! =D

I was so glad then. I managed to solved a computer problem by myself. But thinking about it during the day, i realised that i am still a noob -_-. The solution wasn’t very difficult and yet i didn’t think of it early enough. I think my future in computer engineering in Uni will be full of difficulties and obstacles for me to overcome.

For now, i just hope my com doesn’t give me any more stunt and i’ll be contented.

Oh btw, wednesday got medic cover. sianz.
